Back in his office, he ran criminal checks on Valerie using both last names, but came up empty. He ran another Google search and discovered something a little odd in her history. An issue had been brought up before the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS), the California state regulatory agency responsible for licensing, examination, and enforcement of professional standards. It took some work to find out what the complaints were about.

Two different people had complained about Valerie’s conduct regarding molesters. One was a comment she’d made about a child’s father, the alleged molester. Normally, no one would complain about such a thing, but this mother had been convinced that her husband had done nothing wrong and hadn’t liked Valerie’s assessment of the situation. The other came from a co-worker who found it in bad taste when Valerie proposed, supposedly in jest, that instead of going to trial, these guys should have razor blades tied around their penises and be shown naked pictures of little girls. If the photos excited them, it would determine validity to the charges and carry out the sentence at the same time.

JP had to chuckle. He agreed with her. It sounded like Texas justice to him.

He added the therapist as another suspect to his list. He wanted to hand her name over to Wells, but then he would have to give up Katherine too. He wasn’t ready to do that yet. He’d think about it. Instead, he called Valerie’s office and set up an appointment to see her on Wednesday. She was reluctant at first, but agreed to give him ten minutes.
